The Blue Mermaids is a transnational peacekeeping force formed to protect maritime Japan and sea lanes all across the world. It operates a large fleet of state-of-the-art warships, namely modified Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), to fulfill its mandate.

History Edit

Following the Russo-Japanese war, Japan began mining methane hydrate on the seafloor to meet its energy demands. As time passed, however, excessive mining led to much of Japan's landmass sinking, including much of real-life Tokyo, if not all. In response, the Japanese began constructing floating cities where the land-based ones used to be. Boats and skippers supplanted cars as the vehicles of choice for the maritime civilians.

With the rise of the maritime cities also came the need to protect them, as well as vital sea lanes that supply them. Women began manning warships to safeguard the cities and sea lanes without giving the impression of war in doing so. Principal Mayuki Munetani's grandmother became one of the pioneer members of the Blue Mermaids, resulting in the family tradition of Munetani women serving in the force.

Mayuki herself served with the Blue Mermaids, distinguishing herself during the action 15 years prior to the events of Hai-Furi. Commanding the warship Kurushima, she managed to blunt an attack by an armored fleet rampaging in territorial waters.

Since its establishment, the Blue Mermaids has established its reputation as a peacekeeping force. This, in turn, inspires young girls like Akeno and Moeka to follow in their footsteps and join in protecting the seas. Maritime high schools all over the country prepare them for such responsibilities through training on old warships. If anything, the local culture has also been influenced by the Blue Mermaids.

Organization Edit

Not much is known about the hierarchy of the Blue Mermaids. However, many members work with maritime affairs agencies such as the Maritime Safety Support Department, which operates Mashimo's department: the Safety Oversight Office.

The Blue Mermaids has several branches such as the Rapid Response Security Force, a quick-reaction force formed to respond to emergencies, such as the Shinbashi sinking, as quick as possible.

As for its assets, it can be said that the Blue Mermaids operates at least five fleets, with one comprised of at least four ships.

As a transnational body, the Blue Mermaids can enter the waters of adjacent maritime countries on security operations. One example is the Philippines, where much of the Blue Mermaids' strength was deployed in anticipation of meeting the infected Musashi.
